Sustainability at Grant Thornton

Grant Thornton wants to be a sustainable and impactful organisation. To remain relevant for clients, future employees and other stakeholders. But above all, from our deep conviction that sustainability and social impact are crucial for a future-proof company. Therefore, we are pursuing two tracks: our sustainable and impact services for our clients and our own future-fit business operations.

Making an impact through our services

Grant Thornton is a service organisation. The greatest impact we can make is by helping clients with their transformation towards a responsible economy and sustainable and inclusive business operations. We do this across all our disciplines: accountancy, tax advisory and advisory services. For sustainability advisory services, you will quickly arrive at Impact House by Grant Thornton. Impact House brings all expertise together under one roof: from strategists to researchers, from climate and biodiversity to social inclusion. We have over 20 years of experience working with companies, social organisations, investors and governments.

Future-proof business operations

The CSRD requires companies to be transparent about their efforts in the field of sustainability. Although the legislation has been postponed by a few years, we believe – also as an advisor and accountant in this domain – that it is our responsibility to take steps in this area.

Material topics and value creation model

We conducted an analysis on the sustainability topics Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). From this, our material sustainability themes have been established, including:

  • CO₂ emissions and energy consumption
  • Working conditions and work environment
  • Diversity, equality and inclusion

In our 2024 annual report, you can read more about our sustainability approach and find our value creation model. This model shows which capital flows we deploy, such as people and systems, which results and social effects we achieve and how we contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the 2025 annual report, we will revise this value creation model and bring it fully in line with the CSRD guidelines.

Setting goals and improving

Grant Thornton has committed to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). Based on our complete greenhouse gas inventory, we have established scientifically substantiated reduction targets for emissions in the short and medium term. The goals we have committed to are:

  • Net-Zero: by 2050 we will achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain.
  • Short term: we will reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 63.0% by 2035 compared to the base year 2024. We also commit to reducing absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 37.5% within the same timeframe.
  • Long term: we will reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90.0% compared to the base year 2024. We also commit to reducing absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90.0%.

ESG Report – Grant Thornton Advisors

We’re pleased to introduce the first ESG report for Grant Thornton Advisors, reflecting the strength and ambition of our growing platform. This report sets out our direction. It makes clear where we stand today and where we’re heading next.

Across our firms, we’re aligning the way we work through shared standards and coordinated ways of working. That alignment is complex, and we approach it deliberately, guided by how we serve clients today and how we will need to support them in the future. As part of this journey, we are reviewing our environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities to learn from one another and build on best practices.

We’ve made meaningful progress, and there is more to do. As we turn alignment into action, quality remains at the centre of everything we do.
