With more than 10 years' experience working in indirect tax Robert-Jan enjoys advising businesses on all matters around Dutch and international indirect tax.

His work involves providing consulting and advisory services on the more complicated aspects of large and complex businesses. He works across all sectors with extensive experience in the multi-level-marketing, airline and health care sectors.

He is delighted to be one of the facilitators in the International Indirect Tax Training program Grant Thornton offers to their junior and mediors and to be part of Grant Thornton International's EMEA indirect tax committee. This role enables him to work with member firms and colleagues across the world, share knowledge and best practice, as well as train and mentor our people.

Experience

Robert-Jan graduated fiscal law at the Tilburg University with a master in indirect taxation in 2010. During his study, Robert-Jan worked as student employee at KPMG and Ernst & Young from 2007 until 2010. In 2010, Robert-Jan became a member of the Grant Thornton’s European VAT and Customs team in the Netherlands. In 2018 Robert-Jan graduated the post-master in Indirect Tax Assurance. In 2020 Robert-Jan completed the Young Executive Program.

Robert-Jan practices international value added tax and is a leading partner on pan-European VAT compliance and advisory projects.

Specific experience

Robert-Jan is a leading member of the Tax Technology Group of Grant Thornton Netherlands, with a main focus on VAT related tax automation solutions, such as VAT compliance automation and the VAT checker developed by Grant Thornton Netherlands. Robert-Jan is also a member of our Health Care Industry Group.

VAT Own staff required for a fixed establishment

The Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) stated in its important VAT case C 931/19 (Titanium) that own staff is required for a fixed establishment (FE) to be created. If the owner of the property does not have his own staff for the rental then this property does not create a FE for him. Based on previous decisions by CJEU it was not clear whether presence of own staff and technical resources is always required to create a FE. Several EU countries (MSs) should change their policies as a result of this decision.

E-commerce OSS registrations are open in the Netherlands

As of 1 July 2021 all intra-EU distance sales of goods (e.g. all online sales from the stock located in the EU ), will be subject to VAT in the EU MSs where customers are located (in the country of arrival of the goods).
